Mar 06, 2020 · A spatial map of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) present in columns of the atmosphere below NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite as it flew over Las Vegas on Feb. 8, 2018. Warmer colors over the city center indicate higher amounts of carbon dioxide. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Utah › Larger view
OCO-2 The Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2, or OCO-2, is an Earth satellite mission designed to study the sources and sinks of carbon dioxide globally and provide scientists with a better idea of how carbon is contributing to climate change. Retrieval process OCO-2 infers atmospheric CO 2 mixing ratios from space by looking at solar radiation in the near-infrared that has reflected off of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. It measures absorption by CO 2 in the weak and strong CO 2 bands at 1.61 and 2.06 μm, as well as by O 2 in the O 2 A-band at 0.76 μm. According to deputy project science Annmarie Eldering, previous CO2-monitoring satellites were returning just 1-2 percent of the data that OCO-2 is sending back to Earth. Gridded carbon dioxide mole fraction (XCO2) and other select variables created by applying local kriging (also known as optimal interpolation) to daily aggregates of Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO-2) bias corrected data. 4/21/2020: The ACOS/GOSAT V9r data have been released!
